Bloomberg News discussed the United States urging the Ukraine to reform its energy sector. Ukraine, the country through which most Russian natural gas travels en route to the rest of Europe, failed to deliver Russian natural gas to over twenty countries in 2008 due to contractual complications with Russia.

Euronews sat down with Gazprom’s Deputy Chairman and exports Director-General Alexander Medvedev to discuss the Ukraine gas crisis, as well as Gazprom’s reaction. While Russia and the Ukraine could not finalize a contract to supply gas to Ukraine, Gazprom sent gas to other European customers through the Ukrainian system. According to Medvedev, however, the gas never reached those customers.

Following Gazprom’s claim that the Ukraine stole gas intended for customers throughout Europe, Gazprom is exploring alternative routes for delivering gas to its European customers.

BBC spoke with Gazprom’s Deputy Chairman Alexander Medvedev said Gazprom is eager to reach a solution, but cannot because Ukraine’s leaders are unavailable. “We are ready to enter negotiations day and night, but they probably have other tasks than to solve this problem because they are not in Moscow,” Medvedev said.

In an interview with Nepszabadsag, Sergey Kuprijanov discussed the gas dispute between Gazprom and the Ukraine, pointing out that Russia is doing its best to ensure that there is no repeat of the 2006 situation in which the Ukraine was left without gas.
