Background of the gas conflict between Gazprom and Naftogaz Ukrainy:

In January 2009, Europe witnessed an unprecedented gas transit crisis. In a move to restore gas flows to the European Union, Gazprom and Naftogaz put their relationship on a new basis and signed two commercial contracts on 19 January 2009. These contracts govern the transit of Russian gas to Europe and the supply of Russian gas to Ukrainian consumers respectively until 2019.

Gazprom is working to enhance Europe’s energy security

  • On 19 January Ukraine’s Naftogaz and Russia’s Gazprom signed ground-breaking agreements, supported by both the Ukrainian and Russian governments, on the supply of gas to Ukraine and the transit of gas through Ukraine to Europe. Gas flows to Ukraine and via Ukraine to Europe resumed at 10am Moscow time on 20 January 2009 and were fully restored on 21 January 2009.

Gazprom is continuing its efforts to find a solution to the Ukrainian gas dispute and deliver gas to its European customers. It has made a number of proposals and attempts to resolve this crisis as quickly as possible.
